Handwritten words are regular features of Lambrecht’s paintings, fading in and out of her work. Isolated words, repeated words and lists are written out in Portuguese and German, and also, since her move to Broadstairs in the United Kingdom in 2017, in English. The words she includes often describe her immediate surroundings, both domestic and natural. Lambrecht values the process of painting more highly than the finished article, having learnt from her tutor in Berlin, Raimunde Girke, to enjoy painting as a meditative practice. The artist composes her paintings over a long period of time, with some works taking approximately three months to complete. Over the course of this process words are written in, obscured, re-written and sometimes changed entirely. Lambrecht sees these words as Brechtian interruptions, devices that reveal the artifice of the composition. The words that she chooses to include in her works directly reflect the way that she allows herself to be influenced by her surroundings. The use of language manifests as a method of physical and psychological self-location and the words included become mantras to accompany the meditative process of painting.
