The oil painting was created while Van Scherpenberg was living in in Amapá on the island of Santana by the Amazon river from 1968 – 1973. The work evokes a powerful sense of van Scherpenberg’s time in the Amazon, and was likely created with paint the artist mixed herself with locally available materials. The work is notable as one of few which have survived from the artist’s early work following a Amapá before she moved to Rio in 1973.
