Manuela Ribadeneira
Cecilia Brunson Projects is pleased to present a solo show by Manuela Ribadeneira (b.1966, Quito, Ecuador). The artist’s first show at CBP serves as a continuation of her recent explorations of landscape or paisaje.
This series of works stems from her upbringing in Quito. The Ecuadorian capital is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes (both active and dormant) and so they have been an ever-present feature of her life. For Ribadeneira, a paisaje is a place of identity – carried in an individual’s memory and psychological makeup. Her interest lies in the relationship between an individual and their surroundings, the construction of the paisaje which occurs through looking and listening. She suggests that a paisaje is “a place from which by looking you define a surrounding.”
